Editing

Editing requires some rewriting in regards to grammar use and readability while keeping the author's content and style. Constructive criticism or suggestions may be given on all or part of the author's work.

An example of editing:


'I can't be bothered, you do it,' he whined.
Suzie smiled although she acted as if she was mad. 'Fine then, I will.' She slammed the door shut firmly. 'I'll teach him, I'm going to buy a brand new dress with his credit card.

Could become:

A manuscript may require a more comprehensive edit when substantial organisation and rewording is necessary. This type of in-depth editing can take up to three months depending on the length of the document. Proofreading

Proofreading eliminates spelling and typographical errors, incorrect word usage, and corrects punctuation.

Proofreading is a vital process and shouldn't be dismissed. The story or article must be error free to be received well by its intended audience. Annoying distractions such as misspelt words and incorrect punctuation can interrupt the flow causing the reader to lose interest. Besides looking unprofessional, the author loses credibility.

It is usually difficult for an author to notice his or her errors. When checking, the author already knows what the text is meant to say, so the brain tells the eyes what it should be rather than what is there.

Might become:

How exciting, I thought until the horse took one look at the crowd, stopped before the finishing line and refused to go on. I personally doubted his potential as a Melbourne Cup winner after that.


This cuts the original 70 words to 62, it retains the original content without unnecessary words that can slow the pace, and cause the reader to become bored.
